Translators convert text from a source language into a target language. A professional translator always conveys the style, the text’s tone and purpose too.
As a professional translator I apply the best translation approach for the target text while respecting the source language. My concern is to check that the target audience can enjoy the full meaning of the original document while still appreciating its authentic subtleties.
Is translation a one-way street?
French and Spanish are my source languages after having worked and resided in both countries on and off for the last twenty years. Mastering both cultures and languages has brought me to native fluency.
However, I translate primarily into one sole language—my native mother tongue…English.
So yes, translation is a one-way street but it connects people on many different levels.
Do I have an accent? When I speak, yes, I hope so! Mine is ‘recieved pronunciation’…or neutral English. Other accents, when translating dialects and regional lexical terms are within my scope too. Adapting to a specific country or region is called ‘localisation’, it accounts for differences in culture and dialect. These nuances are of top-notch importance.
Regional British or American English are but a few of the challenges in translating but having experience, a trained eye and ear helps!
